Cholesterol

What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol forms part of the outer membrane that surrounds every cell. It's used to insulate nerve fibres (and so make nerve signals travel properly) and make hormones, which carry chemical signals around the body.

Without cholesterol, your body wouldn't work - it's vital to ensure the body's normal function.

Too much cholesterol in the blood, however, increases the risk of coronary heart disease and disease of the arteries.

Cholesterol and food
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that food's packed with cholesterol. In fact, very little cholesterol is found in foods. The main culprits are eggs, offal and shellfish.

What's important is the type of fat in the food you choose, especially saturated fat. Once inside the body, the liver turns this fat into cholesterol.

Lipoprotein levels
Knowing your cholesterol level isn't, on its own, enough to tell you your personal risk of heart disease. You also need to know about lipoproteins. These are special molecules that carry or transport cholesterol around the body.

There are three main types:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often known as bad cholesterol - this carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells and, if supply exceeds demand, can cause harmful build-up of cholesterol
High-density lipoprotein (HDL), or good cholesterol - this takes cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver, where it's either broken down or excreted
Triglycerides

The greatest danger is when someone has high levels of LDL cholesterol and trigylcerides, and low levels of HDL cholesterol.

What are healthy levels?
The average total cholesterol level in the UK is 5.5mmol/l for men and 5.6mmol/l for women, which is above a normal level. So does that mean that most people need to take anticholesterol drugs?

In recent years, we've come to realise that to decide whether an individual's cholesterol levels are dangerous, these levels need to be considered in the light of the person's overall risk of heart disease.

In particular, it's the balance of different types of lipoproteins, rather than the overall total cholesterol level, that matters.

This overall risk is determined by a combination of factors, including age, gender, family history of heart disease, and whether someone smokes, is overweight, has high blood pressure or diabetes.

The higher the risk of heart disease (for example, a male smoker with high blood pressure and diabetes), the greater the need to get cholesterol levels down.

But what constitutes a healthy cholesterol level is controversial, even among doctors.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Department of Health cholesterol guidelines, which is the policy doctors follow, are:

Total cholesterol - less than 5.0mmol/l
LDL cholesterol - less than 3.0mmol/l

However, the Joint British Societies (a group of the main UK expert societies involved in cardiovascular disease) recommend different cholesterol limits for people who have, or are at risk of, coronary heart disease:

Total cholesterol - less than 4.0mmol/l
LDL cholesterol - less than 2.0mmol/l

Some believe the lower the cholesterol level, the better in terms of preventing heart disease. These people argue that because cholesterol-lowering drugs mostly appear to have minimal side-effects, almost everyone should take them.

But other experts argue that the research evidence doesn't show any particular benefit for certain low-risk groups, such as women who don't have a history of heart disease, and some point to recent concerns about side-effects, such as damage to muscles or the kidneys.

With anticholesterol drugs now being sold without prescription at the pharmacy, the decision about how far to control cholesterol is being pushed into the consumer's hands.

One in 500 people has high cholesterol because of an inherited problem, called familial hyperlipidaemia. If this includes you, you can get more information from Heart UK.

What's the treatment?
The first steps in treating high cholesterol levels are:

Regular physical activity
Healthy eating

The latter means cutting down on fats, especially a type called trans fats, and replacing saturated fats with unsaturated alternatives. There are also some foods that may help to lower cholesterol levels, particularly garlic, soya, oats, corn and selenium-enriched cereals.

Genetic fingerprinting is a technique used to distinguish between individuals of the same species using only samples of their DNA. Its invention by Sir Alec Jeffreys at the University of Leicester was announced in 1985. Two humans will have the vast majority of their DNA sequence in common. Genetic fingerprinting exploits highly variable repeating sequences called minisatellites. Two unrelated humans will be unlikely to have the same numbers of minisatellites at a given locus.PCR is used to obtain enough DNA to then detect the number of repeats at several loci. It is possible to establish a match that is extremely unlikely to have arisen by coincidence, except in the case of identical twins, who will have identical genetic profiles.

What is peat?

Peat is vegetable matter which has been partially carbonized due to the way in which it decomposes. Over time, peat deposits have the potential to evolve into coal. There are a number of uses for peat, although the two primary uses are as a type of fuel and as a fertilizer. Many countries exploit and sell their peat resources, especially Ireland, Scotland, and Finland. In these nations, blocks of peat are readily available as a fuel source, and peat is also sold in less compacted form for gardeners.

The process of peat formation is very slow. Moss is one of the primary components of peat, although it may also contain other plant matter such as grasses and shrubs. In addition, peat often contains decomposing material of animal origin. In order to form peat, conditions must be wet, acidic, and cold. As a result, peat forms most often in bogs and marshes, which are wet with poor drainage, promoting peat formation.

The cold and acidity keep decomposition rates slow. It can take hundreds or thousands of years for a peat deposit to build up, as layers of new plant material grow on top of layers of decomposing peat. Many cultures associated peat bogs with spirits or gods, and traces of sacrifices can be found in peat bogs in many parts of the world. Tollund Man ( see the picture above), for example, is believed to have been a sacrificial offering to a peat bog. The highly acidic conditions of peat bogs have preserved some of these victims remarkably well, allowing archaeologists to learn more about the periods in which they lived.

When peat is harvested, it is cut out of the bog in long strips which are compressed and dried. Peat harvesting has put bogs all over the world in danger, as it can be collected much more rapidly than it will be replenished, creating a dramatic change in the natural environment of the bog. Once compressed, the peat may be fired as fuel, mixed into gardens to retain moisture and promote nutrient retention, or used to create biodegradable planters for plants. Peat can also be used to make paper, pad livestock beds, or pack products for shipment.

Consider a cross between two mice heterozygous for both these genes.

Presenting Data
Bob wanted to investigate the effect of exercise on his heart rate. He measured his pulse at rest and then again after completing 1 minute of moderate exercise. He then increased the duration of exercise by 1 minute each time up to a maximum of 5 minutes and he measured his pulse after each time. He also repeated the whole investigation a further 2 times.
His pulse measurements were as follows:

At rest it was 70, 74 and 72 beats per minute.
After 1 minute of exercise it was 90, 96 and 102
After 2 minutes it was 113, 140 and 120
After 3 minutes it was 130, 136 and 143
After 4 minutes it was 145, 135 and 149
After 5 minutes it was 157, 144 and 156

Produce a table to display the data in an appropriate way. Remember the ‘rules’ of drawing a table. Plot the results in a graph.

Calculating Percentage Change
Sara took some samples of soil from a woodland ecosystem. Each sample was placed in a paper box that had previously been weighed. These boxes of fresh soil were placed in an oven set at 70oC so that all the water could evaporate off. After a day, Sara retrieved the soil samples and re-weighed them. She then calculated the loss in mass (equivalent to water content) for each soil. Her results are shown in the table
